This has been a very short, but busy week at SCCS!

I thought I would share this Autumn prayer with you that we had at our Principal’s Meeting this week.

God of all seasons, we thank you for Autumn.  We thank you for the touch of coolness in the air that gives us a new burst of energy, for the coloring of trees that shows the creativity of the Divine Artist, for the falling leaves that reveal the strength of the branches, for the hues of fields that bring peace to our souls, for the smiles on pumpkins that bring joy to children, for the fall harvest which brings us gratitude for the bounty of our land, for this change of seasons that reveals the circle of life.
God of all seasons, as you transform the earth, transform us by your Spirit.  Amen.
(Rev. Doug Leonhardt, S. J.)

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!
Tammy

MESSAGE FROM MR. DOMOLEWSKI & THE GR. 7 STUDENTS

Hello St. Charles’ Families,

My Grade 7 students and I would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone who donated dental products to our Siloam Mission Drive over the past week.

We had an amazing time learning how Siloam Mission contributes to the Winnipeg community and how we can share our blessings in our communities. We were able to tour their facility at 300 Princess Street. They truly do amazing work here in our city and encouraged us to make a difference as well.

Through your incredible generosity and compassion, we were able to donate an amazing amount of toothpaste, adult and children’s toothbrushes and dental floss!

Your thoughtful efforts will make a difference for so many!

Again, thank you!  The Grade 7 Students and Mr. Domolewski

Here we are with the first week of Fall under our belts.  It’s been a great week. 😊

Just wanted to share a “fun fact” with all of you…this year, we are blessed to have 304 students at SCCS.  Did you know that 151 of these students are females, and 153 of them are males?  Those are very close numbers.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Tammy

WELCOME TO ST. CHARLES PARENT COMMITTEE

Last year, the Board of Directors, along with Administration, started a “Welcome to St. Charles Parent Committee.”  The idea was that all new families to SCCS would be assigned a current family to help guide them along the path with how SCCS works, questions about various events, general questions, and being a support as they get to know others in our school community.
I’ve currently reached out to all our new families and have heard back from those who would be interested in being attached to a current family for the purposes listed above.  If you are a current family, and interested in supporting a new family throughout the 2023-2024 school year, please email me directly at tnarynski@stccs.ca

Thank you in advance for your interest and support.

A MESSAGE FROM MR. DOMOLEWSKI

Dear SCCS families,

On Friday, September 22nd, the Grade 7D class will have the opportunity to visit Siloam Mission for an Educational Seminar and Tour for Christian Service Day.

In preparation for our visit the Grade 7 students are holding a donation drive for all SCCS families to participate in! Siloam Mission is in urgent need of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss (satin) for the community members and families that they serve! If possible, Siloam Mission also requires men’s underwear (new).

Students and families may bring these items to the Grade 7 classroom or drop them off in the containers that are provided in our school’s lobby by the front doors for your convenience!

Thank you in advance for your generous contributions to this wonderful, local charity and God Bless,

MEET THE NEW STAFF AT SCCS THIS YEAR

Hello SCCS Community! I am happy to introduce myself as the new kindergarten teacher! With 10 years of teaching experience, primarily in the K-2 range, I am thrilled to be joining the team here at St. Charles. Teaching young minds and watching them develop a love for learning is truly a rewarding experience for me. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive and engaging environment where each student can thrive academically, spiritually, and socially. My husband and I are blessed with two wonderful children, aged 6 and 4. My eldest, Ariella, will also be joining the St. Charles community as she enters grade 1. I am honoured to be a part of the SCCS family, and I look forward to getting to know each of you and your children.

Warm regards, Mrs. Sofia Fliangos

My name is Ellie Chouzouris, and I am most excited to be teaching Grade 6 at St Charles this year. I was born and raised in Winnipeg and grew up in the Fort Richmond community. I am a 2016 UofM Bachelor of Education grad.

My most recent teaching experience is from working with the province as a remote learning educator. I got the opportunity to work with students from all around the province in my online classroom teaching Grades 5 and 6.

I come from a Greek background and one of my passions is folk dance. I’ve been with the Kefi dance group for over a decade and Folklorama is always a highlight of my summer. I have also grown up in the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church community where I have been a part of our Greek language school as a student and teacher, our Sunday School, and summer camp.

I am looking forward to being a part of the St. Charles community and I wish everyone a blessed and healthy school year!

My name is Sonia Longo-Bertolin. I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I have been teaching grade 8 core French for 24 years at Pope John Paul (previously Sacred Heart) for the last 22 years. I have been married to my wonderful husband Rob for 20 years and we share 2 amazing boys, Lucas, and Matthew. Lucas is 17 years old, and Matthew is 15 years old. Lucas and Matthew are the reason that I am in Winnipeg embarking on this great adventure with you, the St.Charles community. Lucas and Matthew had the great opportunity to make the U18 Rink Academy hockey team. They are still young, and I want to help them transition on their new journey. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have this opportunity to work at St.Charles while I support my children at the same time. Some added information about me – I come from Italian immigrant parents. So, my first language was Italian, next I learned English and when I was in grade 4, I was introduced to French, and I fell in love with the language. I have a true passion for languages and cultures. As an Italian, I love to talk, eat, and cook. I enjoy fitness (walking and working out) and reading. I am also interested in fashion and music. I look forward to meeting you.

My name is Melysa McEvoy, and I am the new grade 5 teacher. I am in my second year of teaching and I am very excited to be part of the St.Charles Catholic School community. My family has attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish for many years. My younger brother is a former student of St. Charles Catholic School. During his time as a student, I spent a couple months volunteering in classrooms, observing teachers, and creating lessons. Volunteering at this school changed my career path and inspired my love for teaching. I have previously worked at Gonzaga Middle School where I taught grade 7 and coached the volleyball teams. I am very excited to use my skills and knowledge to contribute to the community here. Most weekends you can find me walking down the Harte Trail or biking through Assiniboine Park. I am very excited for this school year and to be part of the community here at St.Charles.

PUFFERS / EPI-PENS /MEDICATIONS

If your child has an asthma puffer or an epi-pen or any other medication that needs to be here at school and is outlined on your child’s Medical Form, please ensure that you send your child with that puffer/epi-pen/other medication. Epi-pens MUST be carried on the child at all times in a fanny-pack/cross-body pack during his/her time at school; there are no exceptions. Asthma puffers must either be carried on the child in a fanny-pack/cross-body pack during his/her time at school or be left in the Front Office Medical Cupboard to be kept here during the school year should your child need to have it administered at some point. Puffers/epi-pens/other medications should not be held in backpacks because should the medication be needed in an emergency; all school staff must have quick knowledge of whereabouts and access (on person or in Front Office) to your child’s medication for quick administration. If you would like to have an extra puffer/epi-pen at school for your child over and above what they are carrying on their person in their fanny-pack/cross-body pack, you are welcome to keep an extra here in the Front Office Medical Cabinet. There are times when fanny-packs/cross-body packs for puffers and epi-pens are forgotten at home and having a back-up can be lifesaving. Should your child need medication administered at random times during the school year (anti-biotics for example), medications are to be brought to the Front Office by a parent/guardian, the child’s Medical Form is to be noted by a parent/guardian, and the Front Office will administer the medication as per the instructions left. Children should not have any oral medications (for example Tylenol, anti-biotics, medicinal throat lozenges, etc.) on their person or in their backpacks/lockers/desks; these medications should be brought to the Front Office to be administered. Thank you!

HOW DOES THE CHILD ABUSE REGISTRY CHECK PROCESS WORK FOR VOLUNTEERING AT SCCS?

When the school year begins, if you plan to volunteer with our school, it is the policy of the Archdiocese that all volunteers have a cleared Child Abuse Registry Check (CARC) on file with our school. Families must apply every school year at St. Charles Catholic School; there is no cost to you. You must submit a CARC application complete with current and valid ID’s to the Front Office if you plan to volunteer with us; there are no exceptions. Applications are collected, reviewed, and verified in the Front Office by Ms. Jaremowich and then the bulk of the applications are submitted to the CAR office in downtown Winnipeg. The process for the CAR office to do their checks and verifying takes anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Once the applications with them are completed, they are returned to us here at SCCS; generally, in mid to end of November. Once the cleared applications are back at SCCS, a list of cleared and eligible parents is made, and those parents are now permitted to volunteer with us. If you are a new parent here at our school, you are unable to volunteer with us until your CARC is submitted, processed, cleared, returned, and on file with the Front Office. Existing families who have cleared CARC on file with us from the previous school year and a new CARC application submitted for the current school year, are able to volunteer right away as there is a short time period of carry over from one school year to the next. It is important to submit your CARC application as soon as possible at the beginning of each school year so as not to delay your volunteering efforts.

CARC APPLICATIONS WERE SENT HOME WITH ALL STUDENTS TODAY, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2023.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (PAC)

On behalf of the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) I would like to Welcome everyone back to St. Charles. I hope you were able to enjoy the Welcome Back BBQ put together by our Board of Directors and connect with a few of the Parent Reps that were onsite.

This is an invitation for you to attend our first PAC meeting of the year on Thursday September 14th at 6:30 PM. We will be gearing up for the upcoming year and would love to see new faces at the meeting. We are currently looking for PAC members and there may be some open spaces for Parent Reps so if you are interested in participating in either fashion, please make plans to attend.

If you have any concerns, questions or suggestions, I can be reached at the PAC Chair email which is stccspac@stccs.ca. Looking forward to another wonderful school year.

As we embark on a new school year, we are comforted to know that Jesus is our constant and devoted companion.

It is said that every journey begins with a single step.  Let us take that first step with confidence, knowing that we do not travel alone.  We know that Jesus watches over us and will give us what we need to persevere. Amen.

Wishing you a wonderful, peaceful weekend.

See you all for our first “full school week” next week!

2023-2024 Parent Communication – August 2023

Dear SCCS Families,

It’s that time of year again!  The wonderful lazy days of August are ending, and an exciting new school year lies ahead! I hope that you have had an amazing summer and have been able to make some wonderful memories!  I am looking forward to seeing all our returning SCCS families, as well as welcoming all new families to our school community.  If your plans to attend SCCS have changed over the summer months, please contact me immediately, or my Admin. Assistant, Eunice Newman, at sec@stccs.ca

Plans are currently underway for the new school year.  Throughout the year, you will receive timely communication from me with information that needs to be shared with the community.  My door is always open to you.  My contact information is tnarynski@stccs.ca and my office number is 204-837-1520 ext. 222.  You can also reach me by calling the front office and leaving a message.

We are starting the new school year with a new Board Chair, Trish Farkas. Trish currently has two children in our school. Our past Board Chair, as most of you know, was Robyn Powell.  For the last many, many years, Robyn as given her heart and soul to St. Charles, and has now officially assumed the role as past Board Chair.  At this time, I would like to thank Robyn for her many years of service and dedication to SCCS.  She has contributed so much to this school and community.  We wish her all the best as she gets to take some more time for herself and her family. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Robyn!

The staff and Board are looking forward to the start of the new school year and are excited to invite you all to the “Welcome Back to School BBQ” hosted by our Board of Directors, on Friday, September 8th from 3:30pm-6:00pm. Families are encouraged to attend the BBQ to kick off the new school year and have an opportunity to meet each other.  Chocolates should also be available for pick-up at the BBQ.  As with any of our school community events, volunteers are always needed.  Please click on the Sign-up Genius link below to see how you can help.  Thank you in advance.   LINK TO SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE WELCOME BACK BBQ on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2023

Here is some important information to get you started for the upcoming school year:

  • All students from grs. 1-8 will return to school on Wednesday, September 6th for a full day of classes.  The morning bell will ring at 8:35am, and students will be dismissed at 3:25pm.  Kindergarten students and their parents will have a scheduled meeting with their teacher that same day, and information has been sent out to Kinder parents regarding meeting times.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their school supplies in during the first day/week of school.
  • Parents are invited to come into the school on the first day, September 6th, with their child, to drop them off and help with school supply delivery.  Beginning September 7th, parents are asked to drop off/pick up their son/daughter outside at their designated doors.  Kindergarten parents will be allowed to drop off their son/daughter at their classroom until September 15th, and then will follow the same protocol as our grs. 1-8 parents.
  • All students will be assigned an entrance and exit door at school.  Please make sure that your child knows which door is theirs prior to coming to school.  In the morning, from 8:15am until 8:35am, students may be dropped off and must meet at their assigned door.  They will be supervised by a staff member until the 8:35am bell rings.  Again, at 3:25pm, students will be dismissed by their assigned door.  *Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 3:15pm.

If your child is dropped off after 8:35am, please have him/her use the main front doors to enter the school.

  • Child Abuse Registry Checks for parents will be sent home at the beginning of the school year and must be sent back to the office once you have completed the necessary information.  Parents who do not have a cleared Child Abuse Registry Check on file in the main office will not be able to volunteer for the 2023-2024 school year in any capacity. This is a mandate from the Archdiocese of Winnipeg and all our Catholic schools must follow this protocol.
  • Student Fees will be sent out via Permission Click.  Permission Click links can be found on our school website.  They will also be sent out throughout the school year via email.
  • Lunch forms can be found on our school website.  Make sure to login to the Parent Zone to access these forms.
  • Parking/Drop-off protocol is a struggle every year, and our top priority is to keep all our students safe.  When dropping your child off in the loading zone, please pull up into the zone, remain in your vehicle, let your child(ren) out of your vehicle, send them on their way, and drive off.  This will allow other vehicles to pull in behind you. There is no parking in the loading zone during morning drop-of and afternoon pick-up.  Please check the signs.  If you do want to walk your child, (grs. 1, 2, & 3), to the playground, please park in the church parking lot and walk your child across the street at the south crosswalk where patrols/staff will be stationed, and then take your child to his/her assigned doors.  Please do not park in the Retreat Centre parking lot as it is private property and not owned by the school. Please also note that there is no parking in the bus loop in front of the church.  Parents who have children in grs. 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8, are asked to drop your child off on Augier and have your child cross at the patrols/staff stationed at the north crosswalk to get to their assigned doors.  Please note, there is no stopping or parking on Augier in front of the Golf Course at drop-off or pick-up.
  • Principal’s Weekly Update is sent out each Friday either late afternoon or early evening by Mrs. Senderewich, my IT coordinator.  My update includes events that have happened during the week, events that are coming up the following week, plus any important information that I need to share with families.  It’s a very good source of information, and I encourage you to read this communication weekly.
UNIFORM PICK-UP DAY:  Uniform exchanges and orders for new families will be available for pick up at the school on Thursday, August 31st between 10am and 4pm. If you placed an order late – after the scheduled uniform ordering dates – you will receive a shipping notification in your inbox if your order is ready for pick up. Shipping notifications will be emailed on August 28th, 29th and 30th. If you don’t receive a shipping notification, it means your order is not ready to be picked up on the 31st and it will ship to the school in September. Priority is given to new families, and exchanges for families that ordered within the ordering timelines. Any orders received late are fulfilled in the order that they are received with the limited stock on hand. Please also note that embroidery production takes three weeks, which may impact when you receive your orders.  Questions may be emailed to uniforms@promosave.com…. Thank you.

WE NEED YOUR HELP – UPDATE

Your kindness and generosity are amazing SCCS community!!  Donations are coming in, and the family is extremely grateful.  Our front foyer is getting full, but we still have room.  We will continue taking donations into next week.  If you would like to make a monetary donation, please do so at the front office. Charger strong!

As I’m sure many of you are aware, there was a large apartment fire over the weekend in the Crestview area, which left many families without a home, or any personal belongings.

Two of our SCCS students, (Sophia and Gabriella), have a personal connection to this situation, as their uncle, aunt and two cousins, two daughters, 4 years old and 18 months old, were among those left without a home.

Sophia in gr. 6 came to me to ask if we could help in any way.  Of course, this is a wonderful opportunity to show our support to those who need it most right now.

Here are a few options that would be greatly appreciated, but we are open to other items as well.  A toy, or a gently used pjs or other clothing would be wonderful!

We will also be collecting money in the front office, even a $1 would help!  The smallest contribution will have the biggest impact.

Please send items to school beginning tomorrow, and there will be boxes in the front foyer to help with collection.

Thanking you in advance for your generous support.

Go Chargers!

Sincerely,
Tammy

FOOTBALL NEWS

The St. James Rods Football Club and the Manitoba Minor Football Association (MMFA) are pleased to announce the start of player registration for the 2023 Tackle Football season! The program offers co-ed tackle football in four age groups. The seaoson runs form mid July to end of October. All equipment is included in the registration fee, with the exception of cleats.

While the games are competitive, the primarily focus is teaching the fundamental skills and techniques involved in the game in a safe and controlled environment. Because of this approach to coaching the program is open to anyone regardless of experience.

Please register online using the following link: https://app.teamlinkt.com/register/find/stjamesr

Kidsport Canada provides funds to help offset the cost of participant registration fees for community based sport programs. Please contact president@rodsfootball.com if you have any questions.

I’m not sure where this week went, and how it can be the long weekend already.

Wishing you all a terrific upcoming long weekend, and may you enjoy some family time.

See you all next week!
