Academics

Early Years: Grades K-2

Students follow the Manitoba Curriculum for all subject areas. Teachers provide a skill-based focus with active and interactive learning opportunities that encourage the development of the whole child. Classroom teachers provide time and instruction in large and small groups, with an emphasis on encouraging each child to reach their greatest potential. Guided reading is an important part of these grade levels.

Students have opportunities to work in the computer lab at scheduled times. Students also have access to the school library, which provides the resources for class projects and books for recreational reading.

Kindergarten

The all-day format at St. Charles Catholic School allows the .5 day provincial Kindergarten curriculum to be taught at a more controlled and enjoyable pace. By removing the 2.5 hour time constraint both teacher and students have time to explore their Kindergarten fundamentals in a more relaxed environment.

The increased time has also enabled us to expand the amount of Music, French, Physical Education and other extra school experiences offered to our students. The result has been a Kindergarten classroom of learners who enjoy the initial school experience and have enhanced grade one entrance literacy skills due to participating in Guided Reading and Kid Writing programs.

Grades 1-2

Our Grades 1-2 program builds on where our Kindergarten program finishes.

Guided Reading is an important part of these grade levels with the goal of creating fluent, skilled readers. During guided reading, students in a small-group setting individually read a text that has been selected by the teacher based on their instructional reading level. Students learn to work cooperatively in small groups while listening to each other.

Through strong academic foundations in reading, writing and mathematics that are laid out in grades 1-2, our students are ready for their next academic challenges.
