Principal’s Weekly Update and Important Information- October 2, 2026

Attachment:

As we begin a new month, I am filled with gratitude for a meaningful week marked by two special opportunities to come together as a school community. On Orange Shirt Day, our students reflected on the history and legacy of residential schools and our shared commitment to truth and reconciliation. On Friday, students and staff participated in our Christian Service Day and Terry Fox Walk/Run, putting faith into action through service, compassion, and support for others. Through these experiences, our students witnessed how acts of remembrance, generosity, and kindness can make a meaningful difference in the world around them.

As you read through this week’s update, you will see many examples of our students growing academically, spiritually, and socially through faith formation, field trips, literacy initiatives, service opportunities, and community partnerships. Together, we continue to build a school where every child is known, valued, and encouraged to reach their full potential.

One of the most effective ways to support your child’s learning is through conversation. Spend a few minutes each day asking open-ended questions such as, “What was the best part of your day?”, “What challenged you today?”, or “What new thing did you learn?” These simple conversations strengthen communication skills, build confidence, and help children make meaningful connections between home and school. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

On Orange Shirt Day, our Grade 7 and 8 students visited the Assiniboine Residential School Monument to deepen their understanding of the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

Through reflection, prayer, and learning, students honored the Survivors, remembered the children who never returned home, and considered the importance of truth, reconciliation, and respect for Indigenous Peoples. This meaningful experience encouraged students to reflect on how we can all contribute to healing and building a more just and compassionate future.

On Friday, our students put their faith into action during Christian Service Day. Our Grade 7 and 8 students spent the day volunteering at Siloam Mission, learning firsthand about the importance of serving others and supporting members of our community with dignity and compassion.

Meanwhile, students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 participated in a variety of service projects at school, creating thoughtful items such as placemats, door hangers, and friendship bracelets for organizations and individuals within our community. Through these acts of kindness, students experienced how even small gestures can bring joy, encouragement, and hope to others.

Families who wish to support our fundraising efforts can donate through our school’s Terry Fox page: Support Our Terry Fox School Run. Every contribution, big or small, helps continue Terry’s dream of a world without cancer. Thank you for supporting this meaningful cause and helping our students make a difference

Families of Grade 7 and Grade 8 students are invited to attend our Rome 2027 Information Night on Tuesday, October 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school gym.

The evening will provide an overview of the itinerary, travel dates, estimated costs, supervision, and next steps for those interested in participating in this exciting faith-filled and educational journey.

Our Grade 3, 3-4, and 4 students recently enjoyed a memorable field trip to the University of Manitoba’s Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre.

Students explored the journey of food from farm to table, learned about Manitoba agriculture, and experienced hands-on activities that highlighted the important role farming plays in our daily lives.

We extend our thanks to the staff at the Food Discovery Centre and to our parent volunteers who helped make this enriching learning experience possible.

Students in Grade 7 and older who wish to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation are invited to join the Confirmation preparation program at Saint John XXIII Parish. Sessions will begin on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 1:15 p.m. and will continue on designated Sunday afternoons throughout the year in preparation for the celebration of Confirmation in Spring 2027. For registration or more information, please contact the Saint John XXIII Parish Office at 204-832-7175 or office.stjohnxxiii@gmail.com.

To celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and conclude the Season of Creation, Saint John XXIII Church invites families to a Blessing of Animals on Sunday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the south door of the church. Bring your pets and other small animals for a special blessing as we celebrate God’s creation and our responsibility to care for it.
