Principal’s Weekly Update and Important Information- September 18, 2026

Attachment:

At St. Charles Catholic School, our theme this year is Stronger Together, and our newly commissioned altar servers are wonderful examples of how students use their gifts to serve others and strengthen our faith community. We are proud to recognize Janella, Henry, Ella, Elaine, Xavier, Teagan, Alex, Olivia, and Vincent, who have answered God’s call to serve during Mass. Through their leadership, reverence, and commitment, they help create a meaningful worship experience and encourage others to grow in faith.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the teacher leaders who support and mentor our altar servers. Their dedication helps nurture student leadership, faith formation, and service in our school community. Families are warmly invited to join us for our first school Mass on Tuesday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m. as we celebrate together in faith and witness our student leaders serving our school community. Through prayer, leadership, and service, we truly are Stronger Together.

Each teacher maintains a classroom website that contains important information about their classroom program, including curriculum, classroom routines, announcements, and learning expectations. These websites are often the best place for parents to find information about their child’s learning environment and classroom activities.

If you have questions about your child’s learning or classroom experience, please reach out directly to your child’s teacher by email. Teachers are always happy to answer questions and provide support. If a concern arises, we encourage you to contact the teacher as soon as possible rather than waiting, as early communication helps us work together to address questions and support your child’s success.

Here is the link to access all teacher websites: Classroom – St. Charles Catholic School

We warmly invite all Kindergarten to Grade 8 families to join us for our annual Meet the Teacher Evening.

The evening will begin with a formal presentation in the gym, where families will hear important information about the upcoming school year, school initiatives, and opportunities for involvement. Following the presentation, families are welcome to visit any classrooms they wish to explore, meet teachers and staff, and learn more about the learning experiences planned for the year ahead. After the classroom visits, all families are invited to join us for a reception in the cafeteria.

More than anything, Meet the Teacher Evening is about community building. It is an opportunity for families to come together, build relationships, strengthen connections, and celebrate the shared commitment we have to supporting our students. We look forward to welcoming everyone as we continue to grow a strong, faith-filled community where we are truly Stronger Together.

Parking
We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with parking supervision. Volunteers help direct traffic, support safe vehicle flow, and ensure families and guests can arrive and depart safely. This is a great way to contribute to our school community while earning volunteer hours. No special experience is required, and instructions will be provided. Please come to the school office to get a patrol vest. If you are interested in helping, please sign up using the link below: St. Charles Catholic School: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED | 2026-2027 PARKING LOT/LOADING ZONE PATROL

Craft Fair
We are looking for:

• A creative coordinator to assist Julie in event décor and help create a festive, welcoming shopping experience.

• An operations coordinator to assist with event planning, volunteer support, general management, and kitchen coordination.

This is a wonderful opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to our community event while helping bring our school community together. Whether you have a passion for creating beautiful spaces or enjoy organizing and coordinating behind the scenes, we’d love to hear from you! For more information or to express your interest, please contact the Fundraising Committee at fundraising@stccs.ca.

Trivia Night
We are looking for two enthusiastic Event Coordinators to help plan and lead our SCCS Trivia Night on November 10. This volunteer opportunity is perfect for individuals who enjoy organizing events, collaborating with others, and building community. Coordinators will oversee event planning and logistics and will receive their 20 VIP volunteer hours in recognition of their commitment. If you are passionate about creating memorable experiences and bringing families together, we would love to hear from you! For more information or to express your interest, please contact fundraising@stccs.ca.

As required by the Archdiocese, all volunteers must have a cleared Child Abuse Registry Check (CARC) on file each school year. Applications were sent home this week and must be submitted to the front office with valid ID. There is no cost to families. New parents may not volunteer until their clearance is received. Returning parents who had a CARC on file last year and submit a new one for this year may continue volunteering during the carry-over period. Processing takes 6–8 weeks, so please submit your application as soon as possible to avoid delays in volunteering.

The school calendar is available on our SCCS Parent Zone website. Remember to refresh your browser when visiting our school website. We have made many updates over the summer, and without refreshing you may be seeing cached information instead of the most current updates.

Please be aware that this calendar is updated regularly and changes can be made. Please subscribe to our calendar so you can stay informed: Events – St. Charles Catholic School

We now have three supervised crossing locations IN THE MORNING where students can cross safely with the assistance of patrols. This year, we have added a new crossing location on Sansome Avenue.

We encourage parents who are driving along St. Charles Street to have their children cross at either Sansome Avenue or Augier Avenue, where patrols and supervisors are on duty. Using these crossing points helps reduce congestion in the bus loop, loading zone, and church parking lot, decreasing the number of vehicles travelling all the way down St. Charles Street.

Many older students, particularly those in Grade 3 and above, are ready to use these supervised crossing points independently. We appreciate your support in helping us make arrival and dismissal as safe and orderly as possible.

After school, parents are also encouraged to wait at one of the crossing locations to meet their child rather than driving into the bus loop or loading areas. Your cooperation helps improve traffic flow and enhances safety for all students and families.

Our student patrol program is an important leadership opportunity for our students. Over the next week, our Grade 5 students will be learning alongside our experienced Grade 6 patrols as they develop the skills and confidence needed for this role. Beginning the following week, our Grade 5 students will take on their patrol responsibilities independently.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our new patrols learn and grow into their leadership role. Your encouragement and support help our students build confidence, responsibility, and pride in serving our school community.

The Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg are introducing free transit passes for students in Grades 6-12. Passes will be distributed to our students on: September 29, 2026 for Grades 6-8

If your child requires a transit pass, please contact the school office at reception@stccs.ca. If your child does not require a pass, no response is necessary.

If your child loses their pass, or if you decide later in the school year that your child would benefit from one, please contact the school office. Passes will continue to be available throughout the year.

General information:

  • Passes are valid for a full year and will expire on August 31, 2027.
  • Student IDs will not be required for students in grades 6 to 9.
  • Passes issued to students are not transferable and are for the student’s use only.

For information on transit scheduling, routes or on how to use Winnipeg Transit students, families and care-providers are encouraged to access: Winnipeg.ca/youthridefree

If your child requires an asthma puffer, epi-pen, seizure medication, or other prescribed medication, please ensure it is provided to the school as outlined on their Medical Form.

Epi-pens must always be carried by the child in a fanny pack or cross-body pack, with no exceptions. Puffers may be carried in the same way or stored in the Front Office Medical Cabinet. Backpacks, desks, or lockers should not be used to store emergency medication. Families are encouraged to provide a back-up puffer or epi-pen to be kept in the Medical Cabinet.

Any short-term medications (such as antibiotics) must be brought to the Front Office by a parent/guardian, and staff will administer as directed. Students should never carry oral medications at school.

THE TERRY FOX RUN

St. Charles Catholic School is proud to participate in the Terry Fox School Run, an opportunity for our students to honour Terry Fox’s legacy of courage, perseverance, and hope while supporting cancer research. Through this event, students learn the importance of making a difference in their communities and helping others. Families who wish to support our fundraising efforts can donate through our school’s Terry Fox page: Support Our Terry Fox School Run. Every contribution, big or small, helps continue Terry’s dream of a world without cancer. Thank you for supporting this meaningful cause and helping our students make a difference.

We are excited to kick off another cross-country! Students in Grades 4-8 are invited to participate throughout September and October. Practices will take place at school, with some runs occurring in the school neighbourhood. Due to ongoing construction at Crescent Drive Park, we are unable to confirm an end-of-season race at this time; however, families will be informed if a race opportunity becomes available. A Permission Click will be sent out to families soon. We look forward to a fun season of fitness, perseverance, and school spirit!

All students are asked to wear their school uniforms and come ready to smile. Each student will have an individual portrait taken and will also participate in their class photo. We are pleased to once again partner with Lifetouch, our school photography provider. Following Picture Day, proofs and ordering information will be sent home with each student, allowing families the opportunity to view and purchase photo packages if they wish. We look forward to capturing special memories from the 2026-2027 school year!
