As we approach Mother’s Day, we pause to honour and give thanks for the many ways love, care, and guidance are present in the lives of our children. Today, we recognize mothers, step‑mothers, grandmothers, and all those who lovingly serve in a mothering role, each of whom plays a vital part in shaping who our children are becoming through patience, faith, strength, and unconditional support.

This time of year is also special within our Catholic tradition, as May is recognized as the Month of Mary. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a beautiful example of humility, compassion, and trust in God. As we honour Mary this month, we are reminded of the quiet strength and deep love that mothers and caregivers show every day.

I would also like to acknowledge our staff, the majority of whom are mothers themselves. Each day, they balance the responsibilities of family life while generously nurturing, teaching, and caring for the children entrusted to them at school. We are deeply grateful for the dedication, compassion, and faith they bring to our classrooms and community.

Mother’s Day can be a joyful celebration for many, and it can also be a tender day for others. We hold space for all families and offer our gratitude to every person who provides encouragement, stability, and love to our students.

On behalf of our school community, I extend warm wishes to all mothers and caregivers. May this season bring moments of reflection, gratitude, and peace.

Shrek Jr. was truly a huge success and an amazing experience for our students. It brought so much joy to our school community and showcased the incredible talent, confidence, and teamwork of our children. Thank you to our parents for your continued support and encouragement, and to our staff for the time, energy, and care you poured into this production. A special thank you to Ms. Furutani, Mrs. Sherlock, Mrs. Barnes, and Ms. Copeland for their leadership, creativity, and dedication in bringing this performance to life. And to our students-wow! You were amazing. Your enthusiasm, commitment, and joy shone brightly on stage. We hope you feel proud of all that you accomplished.

This year’s SCCS Golf Tournament takes place on May 21, and we are hoping for strong community support to make it a success as this is a fundraiser for the school!

Prizes & Donations: We are collecting quality items to create themed auction baskets (outdoors, home, men, women, children, and more). Gift certificates, high‑value items, and themed donations are greatly appreciated. Each $30 donation counts as one volunteer hour. We are also in need of wine bottles for our wine raffle.

Volunteers: We are looking for volunteers to assist on the day of the tournament. Please reach out if you are available to help.

MILK SPIRIT WEEK

We’re excited to celebrate Milk Spirit Week at school! Throughout the week, students will be invited to show their school spirit while learning about the importance of dairy and healthy choices. We encourage families to watch for daily themes shared by classroom teachers and support students in participating where possible. It’s sure to be a fun and spirited week for everyone!

Thank you to the many parents who regularly support us each Wednesday. We would be very grateful to have some new volunteers join the Wednesday group to help out as well.

Reminder: All orders must be placed through Munch-a-Lunch at www.munchalunch.com ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE. If you have questions, please contact fundraising@stccs.ca. We also are in need and have many volunteer opportunities available: VOLUNTEER for WEDNESDAY FUNDRAISING LUNCHES 2026

We continue to see cars parked in the bus loop. Please DO NOT PARK or WAIT IN YOU VEHICLE in the bus loop! You will be ticketed.

For everyone’s safety, please use only the designated loading zone, parking lot, behind the church or any side streets for student drop-off and pick-up. Your cooperation helps keep all students and families safe.
We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with our parking lot and loading zone patrol. Please sign up using the link below:

  • Golf will take place on Tuesday.
  • Kids‑Netic is scheduled for Wednesday.
  • Tennis will be held on Thursday.

Please note that there will be no BASC on Monday, May 18.
There are a few spots still available for the Father’s Day craft.
Registration is required to attend full‑day BASC on Friday, June 5, which includes a field trip.
Summer Care applicants will receive an email this weekend.

Our Bursary tuition applications are available online for the 2026-2027 school year. Please submit all completed applications to the school office by May 15, 2026. The forms can be found on Parent Zone under Forms & Programs.
Tuition assistance is available for families, and those wishing to apply must complete and submit all required documentation as part of the application process. We are committed to supporting families and encourage anyone with questions to contact the school office.

Several field trips are coming up. If your family requires financial assistance to ensure your child can participate, please do not hesitate to contact administration. We are committed to working with families to ensure all students can take part in these meaningful learning experiences.

Keira Bond, a former student and like every student who has been part of our community, was deeply valued and made a lasting impact that continues today.

Her memorial tree at the front of our school reminds us of her life and spirit. Each year, our community comes together to honour her memory through Keira’s Walk, and we are grateful for the continued support and care shown by our families and staff. Dear SCCS Community,
I’m writing to invite you to join the team, Keira’s Krusaders, in support of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. We’d love to have you join the national movement to end brain tumours and to honour the memory of a very special girl, Keira Bond. This year our Keira Krusader Crew will be meeting at Grant’s Old Mill at 10:00 am on Sunday, June 14th.  We will be walking together along Sturgeon Creek, a place Keira enjoyed. Year‑End Recitals: We are in the final weeks of private music lessons and are excited to celebrate our students at the year‑end recital series on Wednesday, June 3, held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (600 Cambridge Street, River Heights).

  • 4:30–5:30 p.m. — Students of Renate, Lorilee, and Maya
  • 6:00–7:00 p.m. — Students of Elizabeth, Julianne, and Erin
  • 7:30–8:30 p.m. — Students of Rod, Andrew, Kyle, and Melissa

Registration for 2026–2027: 30‑minute private music lessons for the 2026–2027 school year is now open and can be completed using the following link: https://permission.click/gNjPZ/ca.

45‑minute lessons will be offered at the teacher’s discretion, with the registration link shared directly by email. Important deadline: Existing PML students must register by May 15 to secure their current lesson spot for next year. Additional information is available on the PML page of the Parent Portal. On Thursday, students will take part in age‑appropriate presentations from Winnipeg Police Services focused on safety, bullying, and cyberbullying. Presentations will be delivered to the following grade groups:

  • Kindergarten–Grade 2
  • Grades 3–6
  • Grades 7–8

These sessions are an important part of our commitment to student well‑being. They support students in developing an understanding of personal safety, respectful behaviour, and responsible use of technology. Learning directly from community partners helps reinforce positive decision‑making, builds awareness, and empowers students to seek help when needed.

Our school Track & Field meet will take place on May 22 at John Taylor Collegiate. All Grade 4-8 students will be participating in this school activity. We are seeking parent volunteers to assist with events throughout the day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are available and interested in volunteering, please contact Mr. Vechina at jvechina@stccs.ca to sign up. Science Rendezvous returns on Saturday, May 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus.

This free, annual event is Manitoba’s largest hands‑on science and engineering festival and is open to everyone—no registration required.

With over 60 interactive booths, exciting science shows, and a mix of high‑energy activities alongside quieter spaces, there is something for children of all ages and interests. Families are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and discover science in a fun, welcoming environment. Maps and guides are available online to help plan your day.

The St. James Knights of Columbus are hosting their annual garage sale at St. Paul the Apostle Church. Sale Dates & Times: Saturday, May 9: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 10: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
