Principal’s Update – March 21, 2025

As we journey through the third week of Lent, the Gospel reminds us of God’s patience and mercy through the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13:1-9). In this story, the landowner is ready to cut down a tree that has not borne fruit, but the gardener pleads for more time to nurture it, hoping it will thrive. This parable speaks to the heart of Lent—God’s desire for us to grow in faith, guided by His grace and loving care.

At school, we see this message in the way we support our students. Just as the gardener cares for the fig tree, we help children grow by giving them the time, encouragement, and guidance they need to thrive. Lent is a good time to reflect on how we nurture patience, kindness, and faith – both in our children and in ourselves.

We are excited to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at school! On Monday March 17th, students are invited to participate in a Colour Day by wearing green or other festive St. Patrick’s Day attire. This is a fun opportunity to build school spirit and enjoy the celebration together.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is known for spreading Christianity and teaching about the Holy Trinity using a shamrock. As part of our celebration, students will take part in classroom activities that explore the story of St. Patrick, Irish traditions, and the values of faith, kindness, and perseverance. Activities may include reading stories, engaging in creative arts and crafts, and fun learning challenges related to the day.

As always, we encourage students to dress comfortably and appropriately for the school day. We look forward to seeing a sea of green in our hallways! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

These past two weeks, our teachers have been hard at work preparing report cards for every student. Writing report cards is a thoughtful and detailed process that involves carefully assessing each student’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth.

Teachers use a combination of daily classwork, assessments, observations, and student participation to determine each child’s level of achievement. Marks are assigned based on curriculum expectations and reflect not only test and assignment results but also effort, engagement, and overall understanding of the material.

In addition to marks, report card comments provide valuable insights into each student’s learning journey. Comments reflect their achievements, the goals they have met, challenges they may have encountered, and next steps for continued growth. This feedback helps guide both students and parents in understanding progress and areas of focus moving forward.

Report cards will be shared with families on March 21st. If you have any questions once you receive your child’s report card, please feel free to reach out to their teacher.

A big thank you to our Coordinator, Amber, for organizing such a successful fundraiser for our school! We are grateful for the support of all our families and hope you enjoy your pizza!

Principal’s Update – March 7, 2025

PRINCIPAL’S WEEKLY UPDATE AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As we enter the season of Lent, we are called to reflect, repent, and renew our faith. This sacred journey began with Shrove Tuesday, a day of sharing and generosity, followed by Ash Wednesday, where we received the sign of the cross, reminding us to turn our hearts toward God.

Throughout Lent, we prepare for Holy Week, walking with Jesus through His passion, death, and resurrection. It is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—an opportunity to grow spiritually and strengthen our community through acts of kindness and service.

Teachers will be incorporating this season into lessons across subject areas, helping students deepen their understanding of Lent through meaningful discussions, activities, and reflections. In addition, our school will come together for special whole-school activities that encourage prayer, generosity, and community.

Let us embrace this season with open hearts, drawing closer to Christ as we await the joy of Easter, the celebration of His resurrection and the promise of new life. Wishing you a blessed and meaningful Lenten journey.

Principal’s Update – February 28, 2025

PINK SHIRT DAY: A LESSON IN KINDNESS AND COMPASSION

This week, our school community came together to recognize Pink Shirt Day, a meaningful reminder of the importance of kindness, respect, and standing up against bullying. By wearing pink, our students and staff sent a powerful message: that we are committed to fostering a school environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and included.

As a Catholic school, we look to the teachings of Jesus to guide us in our daily actions. One of the most powerful lessons on kindness and compassion comes from the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). In this story, a man is attacked by robbers and left injured on the side of the road. Many pass by without offering help, but a Samaritan—a stranger, and someone least expected to assist—stops, cares for the man, and ensures he is safe. Jesus uses this parable to teach us what it truly means to love our neighbor: kindness is not just about words, but about action.

This message ties beautifully into the origins of Pink Shirt Day, which began when a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In response, his peers chose to wear pink as a sign of solidarity, showing that small acts of kindness can create lasting change. Their simple gesture sparked a movement, reminding us all that when we witness unkindness, we have a choice: to remain silent or to stand up for what is right.

At St. Charles, we strive to instill these values in our students each day. Whether it’s including a classmate in a game, offering a kind word, or speaking up when someone needs support, these small but meaningful actions reflect Christ’s love in our community. Let us continue to nurture a culture of kindness, ensuring that every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a school where compassion and respect shine in all we do.

Sharpening Minds One Mystery at a Time!

Each week, the Grade 5 Detective Club tackles a new mystery, from missing items to anonymous notes, using logic, deduction, and teamwork to crack the case. Presented with extra details to sift through, students must think critically, collaborate effectively, and work within a time limit to uncover the truth. Working in teams of 4-5 students, our young detectives follow in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes or Nancy Drew, making this an exciting and engaging way to develop critical thinking skills. It’s been incredible to see their sharp reasoning and creative problem-solving in action!

At today’s Jump Rope for Heart assembly, students engaged in an important learning session about recognizing the warning signs of heart-related emergencies and understanding how they can take action to help others. This initiative not only promotes heart health awareness but also empowers students with valuable knowledge that could make a difference in critical situations.
In addition to the assembly, students will be incorporating this theme into their gym classes, where they will focus on developing their skipping skills. Jumping rope is a fun and effective way to improve cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and endurance. Through these activities, students will not only build their physical skills but also reinforce the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

I wanted to recognize the dedication of our educators and support staff in advancing Reconciliation in our classrooms.

In September, Indigenous School Leads collaborated to share feedback, explore resources, and strengthen support for students and colleagues on their Reconciliation journey. Manitoba requires all school employees to complete Treaty Education Training by December 2025, and we are proud that the staff at SCCS will all be finished by April 2025. This year, treaty education curriculum lessons are integrated across all subject areas, ensuring all students engage with this important learning.

Guided by our Elder, Father Stan Fontaine, the Truth and Reconciliation Committee is committed to fostering learning through the Seven Sacred Teachings. This year, our community is focusing on Humility, exploring how it connects with Catholic values through meaningful activities and discussions.

We are grateful to our School Leads and entire school community for their commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. By embracing Indigenous history and traditions, we continue to enrich the learning experience for students, parents, and staff.

Celebrating Catholic Schools Week

This week, we join Catholic schools across the city in celebrating Catholic Schools Week—a time to reflect on the incredible gift of Catholic education and the values that make our school community so special.

At St. Charles Catholic School, we are blessed to provide an education that nurtures not only the mind but also the heart and soul. Our students grow in faith, knowledge, and service, learning that success is not just about academics but also about living with compassion, kindness, and integrity.

Throughout the week, we have many exciting activities planned that highlight what makes Catholic education unique. From special theme days to acts of service, these moments remind us that being part of a Catholic school means being part of something greater—a faith-filled community that supports and uplifts one another.

A special highlight of the week is Friday’s staff Inservice, where our teachers and staff will come together with colleagues from other Catholic schools to receive Treaty Education Training.

Pope Francis once said, “To educate is an act of love; it is like giving life.” Catholic education is a beautiful partnership between home, school, and Church, and I want to thank you—our parents and families—for choosing this path for your children. Your support, involvement, and commitment make our community stronger.

The Book Fair committee is looking for an interested person/people willing to execute our Book Fair plans with the coordination of volunteers and Staff Liaisons (Ms. J and Mrs. Senderewich), to ensure the volunteers know what is expected of them for the smooth operation of the fair, setup and decoration, and take down of the fair along with the volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering as the Coordinator or a Volunteer Lead for the Book Fair, please send an email to stccspac@stccs.ca. Nikki will be delighted to discuss what the position entails and any questions you may have.

The VIP Coordinators need your help to ensure the smooth tracking of volunteer hours. Please keep the following in mind when logging your hours in Permission Click:

  • Submit only ONE Permission Click entry per volunteer session. We are receiving multiple duplicate entries, which are time-consuming to process.
  • Ensure accuracy when entering your information. If an entry is unclear and cannot be interpreted, it will be deleted from the system, and you will not receive credit for those hours.
  • Skating volunteer hours: Parents may claim 1.5 hours per class for assisting with skating. If you are claiming more than 1.5 hours, please provide a rationale in the comments (e.g., tied skates for KL and Grade 2).

We have noticed that many families have not yet logged any hours in Permission Click. Please remember that if you have opted into the VIP program, you are required to complete 20 hours by the end of the year to avoid being invoiced. If you need any assistance, please reach out to vip@stccs.ca

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

I would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Paul Loewen, Manager of Advocacy and Accountability at Siloam Mission.

Paul has generously spoken with our students on multiple occasions, offering valuable insights into poverty, the systems that contribute to it, and the role of power and privilege in shaping outcomes. During Catholic Schools Week, he introduced the concept of a “perfect storm”—a combination of three key elements that lead to homelessness: systemic injustice, otherization, and trauma. His message was both inspiring and eye-opening, encouraging us all to act in meaningful ways.

Grade 6 Girls Attend Women and Girls in STEM Science Symposium. This inspiring event featured a panel of remarkable speakers, including government representatives, national scientists, and community leaders.

One of the most memorable moments was witnessing history in the making as Manitoba officially declared February 11 as the Day of Women and Girls in Science! We also received valuable advice from leaders in the science community, encouraging us to explore the many possibilities in STEM.

After the panel, we explored interactive booths where we watched a 3D printer in action, learned about blood testing, created test tube lava lamps, engaged with real scientists, and much more. The morning ended with an exciting science quiz, wrapping up a truly empowering and inspiring experience!

Re-Registration Reminder

Principal’s Update – February 7, 2025

The Power of Reading: Opening Doors to Imagination and Growth

At St. Charles, we believe that a love of reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. Books have the power to spark imagination, deepen understanding, and build empathy by allowing readers to see the world through different perspectives. Whether it’s a favorite bedtime story, an exciting adventure, or a book that challenges us to think in new ways, reading helps children grow both academically and personally.

Developing strong reading habits is about more than just decoding words on a page—it’s about fostering curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. That’s why, during I Love to Read month, we encourage students to explore a variety of books and discover the joy of storytelling. Teachers make reading engaging by incorporating read-alouds, book discussions, and creative activities that bring stories to life. Families can support this at home by setting aside time for shared reading, visiting the library, or simply talking about books together. Even a few minutes each day can make a difference in building confidence and enthusiasm for reading.

One of my favorite memories is reading to my own children. There is something special about sharing a story, turning the pages together, and getting lost in a book’s world. If there’s one piece of advice I can offer, it’s this—read to your children for as long as you can. One day, it stops. They grow up, and bedtime stories fade into memories. But the love of reading, the connection you build through stories, and the lessons learned from books will stay with them forever.

At St. Charles, we are committed to nurturing a reading culture that extends beyond the classroom. Whether students are exploring faith-based stories, historical accounts, or tales of adventure, our goal is to help them find books that ignite their passion for learning. Because when a child discovers the joy of reading, they gain a skill that will serve them for a lifetime.

Parking & Loading Zone Reminder:
Thank you to everyone in our community for following parking protocols and signage to help keep our students safe!

  • Reminder: There is NO getting out of your vehicle in the Loading Zone. Your child must be able to exit the vehicle independently. I’m always happy to assist in the morning to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

At St. Charles Catholic School, our exam procedures are an essential part of a student’s academic growth. Beyond measuring their understanding of key concepts, exams help develop important skills like time management, critical thinking, and effective test-taking strategies.

Students review material learned since September in Math, English, Social Studies, and Science and write a test in each subject. They are guided through the process of studying and preparing for exams, receiving review booklets and strategies to help them succeed. Throughout this experience, they learn how to approach different types of questions, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, short answer, and essay questions.

To support focus and reduce stress, students write one exam per day in a structured and supportive environment. Rather than just a test, exams serve as a meaningful learning experience that builds confidence and encourages students to take ownership of their education. By fostering a positive and structured approach, we help them develop the skills they need for future success.

We appreciate your support in keeping our school days running smoothly! Here are a few friendly reminders about attendance and punctuality—because chasing down missing students isn’t our favorite morning workout.

Reporting Absences & Early Pickups

If your child will be absent, please let us know—otherwise, we’ll have to start our detective work, calling every home to track them down. If you’re planning to pick up your child early, please give both the school office and their homeroom teacher a heads-up. You can email reception@stccs.ca or call and leave a message at 204-837-1520.

Punctuality & Late Arrivals

We’ve noticed an increase in students arriving late, and while we love a dramatic entrance, the classroom is not the place for it!

  • Student drop-off begins at 8:15 AM (with supervision outside or inside if it’s chilly).
  • The first bell rings at 8:25 AM, signaling students to enter.
  • All students should be in their classrooms by 8:40 AM
  • Anyone arriving at 8:40 AM or later is officially late (and trust us, the late slip collection is not something to brag about!).

Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly—your cooperation makes a world of difference. And remember, the early bird doesn’t just get the worm; they also get a stress-free start to the day!

Re-Registration Reminder
This week, Re-Registration Envelopes were sent home with all students. These envelopes contain important forms that must be completed and returned to the school by February 27th.

📌 If your family is not returning next year, please indicate this on the form and return it to the office.

Your prompt attention to this helps us plan effectively for the upcoming school year. Thank you for your cooperation!

Principal’s Update – January 31st, 2025

Communicating with Kindness at St. Charles

At St. Charles Catholic School, we believe that strong communication skills are essential for building a respectful and caring community. We help students develop the ability to express themselves with kindness, confidence, and honesty in a way that strengthens relationships and fosters a positive school environment.

One way we do this is by setting clear expectations for how we speak to one another. Teachers model respectful communication in the classroom by encouraging students to listen carefully, take turns speaking, and respond with kindness—even when they disagree. We use strategies like “I statements” (“I felt upset when…” instead of “You always do this!”) to help students express their feelings without blaming others. Morning meetings, classroom discussions, and small-group activities give students opportunities to practice these skills in real conversations.

When conflicts arise, we guide students through problem-solving rather than simply stepping in to fix the issue. Teachers and staff encourage students to talk things out, reflect on how their words affect others, and find ways to resolve misunderstandings. We also emphasize the power of encouragement—whether it’s through recognizing effort, celebrating achievements, or offering a kind word to someone in need. A simple but meaningful example of this is how we acknowledge one another in the hallways. At St. Charles, students and staff make a point to greet each other with a smile, say “hello,” or offer a quick “good morning.” And if that’s not enough, the administration is outside each morning—even in a -40 windchill—ready to welcome students with a cheerful greeting, a wave, and a warm smile (even if it’s hidden behind a scarf).

By making communication a priority, we give students the tools they need to express themselves in a way that builds trust and strengthens friendships. At St. Charles, our goal is to help every child develop the confidence and compassion to use their words in a way that uplifts those around them—because a kind word can go a long way, even on the coldest days.

The Grade 5 students at St. Charles Catholic School recently had the opportunity to participate in an engaging presentation and workshop titled Brain and You, presented by students from St. Mary’s Academy. This student-led initiative explored the fascinating world of the brain, providing an interactive and educational experience tailored for younger learners.

Through hands-on activities and dynamic discussions, the workshop covered key topics such as how the brain processes information, the importance of healthy habits for brain function, and strategies to enhance focus and learning. The presenters shared relatable examples and creative demonstrations, making complex concepts accessible and exciting for the Grade 5 students.

The event not only enhanced the students’ understanding of neuroscience but also inspired curiosity and collaboration. St. Mary’s Academy students were fantastic role models, showcasing leadership and a passion for education. This experience was both memorable and impactful, leaving the Grade 5 students eager to learn more about the amazing organ that powers their thoughts and actions.

Thank you to our Academic Committee for organizing all of the activities for I LOVE to READ Month! If you have any questions, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Principal’s Update – January 24th, 2025

The Gift of Resilience

Resilience is an essential skill for navigating life’s challenges, and it’s something we can help children develop every day. It’s the ability to adapt, keep going when things get hard, and find strength in the face of obstacles. Faith can play a key role in building resilience by reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles and that challenges can help us grow in unexpected ways.

Children develop resilience by working through setbacks. For example, when a child struggles with a challenging math problem, encourage them to break it into smaller steps or try a different approach. If they lose a game at recess or don’t make the team they hoped for, help them reflect on the effort they put in and discuss what they can do differently next time. These everyday moments are powerful opportunities to teach perseverance and problem-solving skills.

Faith can also provide comfort and perspective during tough moments. Taking time for quiet reflection or prayer can help children process their feelings and regain a sense of calm when life feels overwhelming. For example, sharing the story of David and Goliath can remind children that courage and trust in something greater can help them overcome even the most daunting challenges. Similarly, pointing to moments when they’ve overcome difficulties in the past—like learning to ride a bike or giving a speech—can help them recognize their own strength and progress.

At home, give your child opportunities to work through difficulties independently, like organizing their backpack after forgetting a homework assignment or solving a disagreement with a sibling. Recognize and celebrate their effort and persistence, even when the results aren’t perfect. Resilience isn’t about always getting it right; it’s about learning to move forward, step by step, and finding strength in both the setbacks and successes along the way.

Together, we can help children build the confidence and adaptability they need to thrive.

NEW! GRADE 5 AND 6 SCIENCE FAIR CLUB

This year, St. Charles Catholic School is thrilled to introduce a Grade 5 and 6 Science Fair Club! Students will have the opportunity to brainstorm, research, design, and create their own science fair projects, with guidance from two experienced science fair mentors.

The Science Fair Club will meet on Thursdays after school from 3:30–4:30 p.m. (excluding early dismissal days) and Fridays from 11:35–12:00 p.m.

Students will showcase their projects at our SCCS Science Fair on March 21, 2025. Those interested in advancing their projects further can participate in the Bison Regional Science Fair on April 10, 2025, at Holy Cross School.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

The Grade 1-2 class had the wonderful opportunity to immerse in Métis culture. We listened to a captivating story, admired intricate beadwork, enjoyed a traditional song, and even learned how to play the spoons.

A class parent also shared a capote—a jacket made from Hudson Bay blankets—and a ceinture flèche for us to see.

To top it all off, they tasted freshly made Bannock, making it a truly memorable day!

The Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes had an incredible opportunity to participate in the WISE Kid-Netic program. WISE Kid-Netic Energy, a program from the Price Faculty of Engineering, offers engaging STEM workshops to Manitoba classrooms. These workshops are hands-on, aligned with the curriculum, and led by undergraduate students specializing in Engineering and Science-related fields.

The Grade 3 students were introduced to the basics of coding through fun, unplugged kinesthetic activities and a programmable mouse game.

After learning about various traditional Indigenous structures and concepts such as forces, stability, and strength, students took on the role of civil engineers to design their own Indigenous-inspired structures.

The Grade 4 class began by learning about how sound travels, discovering that it moves most effectively through solids. To apply this knowledge, they built their very own gramophone speaker and used it to play a record, witnessing firsthand how sound waves are amplified.

The students explored the anatomy of the eye, gaining insight into how we see and process light. A highlight of this session was the opportunity to participate in an eye dissection, which allowed them to observe the different parts of the eye up close and understand their functions.

To conclude, students tapped into their creativity and problem-solving skills by creating color codes for an Ozobot robot. These codes directed the robot to respond in specific ways, blending technology and science into an engaging and interactive activity.

We are asking for your help! So far we have raised $69,020. You can track our progress on the school website. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

Principal’s Update – January 10th, 2025

New Year, New Beginnings

The start of a new year offers a fresh opportunity for reflection and growth. It’s a great time for students to set goals that foster motivation and engagement in learning. Encourage your child to think about areas where they want to improve  – whether it’s becoming more organized, building stronger friendships, or developing better study habits. Writing down goals and revisiting them regularly helps keep progress in focus and builds accountability.

Goal setting also supports a growth mindset, the belief that abilities can be developed through effort and perseverance. Instead of focusing solely on grades, children benefit from embracing challenges, learning from mistakes, and celebrating progress. You can encourage this at home by asking questions like, “What challenge did you tackle today?” or “What can you try differently next time?” This approach nurtures resilience and a love of learning.

As we continue this school year, let’s work together to inspire students to take risks, grow through effort, and stay curious. With thoughtful reflection and goal setting, we can help children develop skills that will guide them far beyond the classroom. At the same time, let us remind our children—and ourselves—that while striving for excellence is important, we are loved unconditionally, just as we are. With this truth in our hearts, we can approach new challenges with joy, confidence, and gratitude.

Next week, I will be away from January 15 -17, 2025, as I will be attending a three-day Catholic School Principals’ Retreat. This retreat is an important opportunity for reflection, collaboration, and professional growth as we continue to strengthen the mission and values of Catholic education.
As a result, I will not be sending out a Principal’s Update next Friday. However, if there are any urgent matters during my absence, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school office, and they will ensure your concerns are addressed.

Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead!
