Principal’s Update – March 28, 2025

As we enter the fourth week of Lent and look ahead to Spring Break, we are reminded that this season is about renewal, reflection, and growth. This Sunday’s Gospel, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, beautifully illustrates God’s mercy and the importance of learning from our experiences. Just as the father in the parable welcomes his son with open arms, Lent invites us to reflect on where we are and how we can continue to grow.

This theme of growth also connects with our Parent-Teacher Interviews and Student-Led Conferences. These meetings provide an opportunity to celebrate each child’s progress, acknowledge areas for improvement, and set goals for the months ahead. Just as we nurture faith and learning at school, these conversations help strengthen the partnership between home and school in supporting each student’s journey. It was amazing to see all the families participate this year.

Spring Break offers a similar opportunity to pause, recharge, and spend time with family. Whether traveling or enjoying rest at home, this break can be a time to nurture faith, appreciate the blessings around us, and prepare our hearts for the final weeks of Lent.

The 2025 St. Charles Catholic School Science Fair was a fantastic event, showcasing 33 outstanding projects from our Grade 7 and 8 students. Their projects covered a wide range of scientific topics, including water purification, motor creation, sugar testing for cotton candy, random number generators, and more.

Principal’s Update – March 21, 2025

As we journey through the third week of Lent, the Gospel reminds us of God’s patience and mercy through the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13:1-9). In this story, the landowner is ready to cut down a tree that has not borne fruit, but the gardener pleads for more time to nurture it, hoping it will thrive. This parable speaks to the heart of Lent—God’s desire for us to grow in faith, guided by His grace and loving care.

At school, we see this message in the way we support our students. Just as the gardener cares for the fig tree, we help children grow by giving them the time, encouragement, and guidance they need to thrive. Lent is a good time to reflect on how we nurture patience, kindness, and faith – both in our children and in ourselves.

We are excited to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at school! On Monday March 17th, students are invited to participate in a Colour Day by wearing green or other festive St. Patrick’s Day attire. This is a fun opportunity to build school spirit and enjoy the celebration together.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is known for spreading Christianity and teaching about the Holy Trinity using a shamrock. As part of our celebration, students will take part in classroom activities that explore the story of St. Patrick, Irish traditions, and the values of faith, kindness, and perseverance. Activities may include reading stories, engaging in creative arts and crafts, and fun learning challenges related to the day.

As always, we encourage students to dress comfortably and appropriately for the school day. We look forward to seeing a sea of green in our hallways! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

These past two weeks, our teachers have been hard at work preparing report cards for every student. Writing report cards is a thoughtful and detailed process that involves carefully assessing each student’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth.

Teachers use a combination of daily classwork, assessments, observations, and student participation to determine each child’s level of achievement. Marks are assigned based on curriculum expectations and reflect not only test and assignment results but also effort, engagement, and overall understanding of the material.

In addition to marks, report card comments provide valuable insights into each student’s learning journey. Comments reflect their achievements, the goals they have met, challenges they may have encountered, and next steps for continued growth. This feedback helps guide both students and parents in understanding progress and areas of focus moving forward.

Report cards will be shared with families on March 21st. If you have any questions once you receive your child’s report card, please feel free to reach out to their teacher.

A big thank you to our Coordinator, Amber, for organizing such a successful fundraiser for our school! We are grateful for the support of all our families and hope you enjoy your pizza!

Principal’s Update – March 7, 2025

PRINCIPAL’S WEEKLY UPDATE AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As we enter the season of Lent, we are called to reflect, repent, and renew our faith. This sacred journey began with Shrove Tuesday, a day of sharing and generosity, followed by Ash Wednesday, where we received the sign of the cross, reminding us to turn our hearts toward God.

Throughout Lent, we prepare for Holy Week, walking with Jesus through His passion, death, and resurrection. It is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—an opportunity to grow spiritually and strengthen our community through acts of kindness and service.

Teachers will be incorporating this season into lessons across subject areas, helping students deepen their understanding of Lent through meaningful discussions, activities, and reflections. In addition, our school will come together for special whole-school activities that encourage prayer, generosity, and community.

Let us embrace this season with open hearts, drawing closer to Christ as we await the joy of Easter, the celebration of His resurrection and the promise of new life. Wishing you a blessed and meaningful Lenten journey.

As part of our Lenten journey, we are participating in 40 Cans for Lent, a food drive rooted in Catholic values of compassion and service. This initiative encourages us to give to those in need by collecting non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest.

Students can bring donations to their homeroom teacher’s collection boxes. Together, we can make a difference by living out our faith through generosity and kindness. Thank you for your support!

Encourage your child to “Walk with Jesus” this Lent by marking each day with ways they prepare their hearts for Easter. Students could draw a Lent symbol in the box if they did something to prepare their hearts for Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. An information sheet and calendar were sent home with each student on Wednesday.

Focus on the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving!

Please return completed calendars by Thursday, April 24, for a chance to win a small Easter prize. Winners will be chosen Friday from each grade level!

Thank you to our coordinators and parent volunteers for their time and effort in making our Shrove Tuesday celebration a success! We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to this special event. Through your generosity, we were able to raise money to support the Holy Childhood Association. Your kindness and support reflect the spirit of our community, and we are grateful for the opportunity to come together in celebration.

Principal’s Update – February 28, 2025

PINK SHIRT DAY: A LESSON IN KINDNESS AND COMPASSION

This week, our school community came together to recognize Pink Shirt Day, a meaningful reminder of the importance of kindness, respect, and standing up against bullying. By wearing pink, our students and staff sent a powerful message: that we are committed to fostering a school environment where everyone feels safe, valued, and included.

As a Catholic school, we look to the teachings of Jesus to guide us in our daily actions. One of the most powerful lessons on kindness and compassion comes from the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). In this story, a man is attacked by robbers and left injured on the side of the road. Many pass by without offering help, but a Samaritan—a stranger, and someone least expected to assist—stops, cares for the man, and ensures he is safe. Jesus uses this parable to teach us what it truly means to love our neighbor: kindness is not just about words, but about action.

This message ties beautifully into the origins of Pink Shirt Day, which began when a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In response, his peers chose to wear pink as a sign of solidarity, showing that small acts of kindness can create lasting change. Their simple gesture sparked a movement, reminding us all that when we witness unkindness, we have a choice: to remain silent or to stand up for what is right.

At St. Charles, we strive to instill these values in our students each day. Whether it’s including a classmate in a game, offering a kind word, or speaking up when someone needs support, these small but meaningful actions reflect Christ’s love in our community. Let us continue to nurture a culture of kindness, ensuring that every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a school where compassion and respect shine in all we do.
