Our school is once again participating in Jump Rope for Heart, supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Students took part in an assembly today where they learned about keeping their hearts and brains healthy. Each student received a postcard with a QR code linking directly to our school’s fundraising page to make contributing simple and accessible.

You can also access our fundraising page here: St Charles Catholic School – Winnipeg | Heart & Stroke Jump Rope for Heart

As part of our Lenten journey, we are participating in the 40 Cans for Lent initiative. We invite families to donate canned goods and non‑perishable items throughout the season. All items can be brought to the school office or directly to your child’s classroom.

One of the most meaningful lessons we can teach our children is the joy and responsibility of giving to others. When children learn to share what they have, they begin to understand compassion, empathy, and the call to care for our neighbours.

You play an important role in helping your child learn generosity. Here are simple ways to nurture giving at home:

  • Choose pantry items together to donate.
  • Pick a donation while grocery shopping and talk about helping others.
  • Encourage earning and giving through small chores and setting aside a portion for charity.

Thank you for helping us make a meaningful impact during this season of giving.

As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening our school and planning responsibly for the future, we are conducting a strategic survey to gather meaningful feedback from our community. Your perspective as a parent is essential. The insights you share will help us better understand our strengths, identify areas for growth, and prioritize our work in the years ahead. All responses are confidential, and the survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Parent Survey: https://forms.gle/7ewdzwJNaXLTEHzi7 Due: March 15, 2026

Thank you to our Academic Committee for organizing all the activities for I LOVE to READ Month! Here are a few pictures from Valentines Day and Flashlight Friday. (Available on the .pdf copy at the bottom of the Update.)

Next week, our Grades 3–5 and Grades 6–8 choirs will be performing in the annual Music Festival. This long‑standing event gives our students the opportunity to grow as musicians, strengthen their confidence, and experience the joy of sharing their gifts through song.

Each year, our choirs participate in this festival and being adjudicated by professional musicians is an important part of the experience. The festival also celebrates their hard work, and students look forward to the excitement of receiving gold or silver recognition for their ensemble performance.

Parents are warmly invited to attend and cheer on our students as they proudly represent St. Charles Catholic School. Please visit Parent Zone for more information.

Starting next week, we will be selling musical tickets after school.

Support our Musical program by purchasing tickets for musical baskets! Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased through the school office or at WAG on May 4.

This year’s baskets include:

  • Kids’ Basket – valued at $150
  • Couples’ Basket – valued at $300
  • Family Basket – valued at $375

We continue to see students getting in and out of vehicles in unsafe areas. This increases the risk of accidents. The problem areas continue to be:

  • The bus loop
  • Cars stopping on St. Charles Street (both sides)

For everyone’s safety, please use only the designated loading zone, parking lot, behind the church or any side streets for student drop-off and pick-up. Your cooperation helps keep all students and families safe. We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with our parking lot and loading zone patrol. Please sign up using the link below:

Our Grade 5 students completed their annual Simple Machines Projects, a long‑standing tradition that brings their science learning to life. As part of the curriculum, students explore how tools like levers, pulleys, wheels and axles, and inclined planes make work easier. They applied this knowledge by designing and building a model that demonstrates how a simple machine functions.

This project strengthens problem‑solving, creativity, and communication skills-and remains a favourite Grade 5 tradition each year.

Our Grades 4 and 5 students participated in Athletics Manitoba’s Indoor Track Elementary Relays on Tuesday. They demonstrated outstanding teamwork and school spirit, enthusiastically cheering on St. Charles throughout the various events. We are proud of their effort, sportsmanship, and commitment to representing our school so well.

THE SCCS LAPEL PIN LEGACY PROJECT

The SCCS Lapel Pin Legacy Project is a new tradition that allows students to leave a lasting mark on our school community. The Grade 8 students created pin designs that reflected their personal SCCS journey. Students and staff across the school then voted to choose the final pin that best represents the spirit of the school year.
Current families, alumni, extended relatives, and supporters are all welcome to order. Each pin is professionally produced from the student’s artistic vision and is 1 inch in diameter. Pins cost $5 each. Please place your orders by March 6, 2026. Pins are anticipated to be ready for pick‑up before Spring Break. Thank you to our Academic Committee for organizing all the activities for I LOVE to READ Month! Up next is PJ Day and Flashlight Friday! If you have any questions, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Pink Shirt Day is recognized each year as a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to stand up against bullying in all its forms.

Students and staff wear pink to promote kindness, inclusion, and respect, while raising awareness about how bullying affects children and youth both in person and online. Pink Shirt Day encourages communities to speak up, support one another, and create environments where everyone feels safe, valued, and seen.

Catholic Schools Week was about community, faith, learning, and service. It highlighted the strong partnership between home, school, and Church, and reminded us that Catholic education nurtures the whole child-mind, body, and spirit. At St. Charles, our faith is woven into daily learning, relationships, and decision-making, and this week allowed us to celebrate that shared mission in meaningful ways.

Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of engaging activities. We hosted STEM workshops, celebrated Valentine’s Day, marked the 100th Day of School, and took part in several fun and collaborative group activities. Each class also went on a special field trip, extending learning beyond the classroom and strengthening our sense of community.

We concluded the week with an in-service day on Friday. Our teaching staff joined educators from other Catholic schools for a shared professional workshop. This time together allowed our teachers to collaborate, deepen their practice, and continue growing in their vocation as Catholic educators.

I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the parents who volunteered throughout the week. We truly could not have done it without you. Your willingness to give your time and energy speaks volumes about the strength of our community and the value you place on being actively involved in your child’s education. Your presence and support make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for your continued partnership in making St. Charles such a vibrant and thriving community.

St. Charles Street, the parking lot, and the bus loop are single‑lane traffic areas. Passing another vehicle is not permitted at any time. This behaviour is dangerous and creates serious safety risks and confusion during drop‑off and pick‑up.

Drivers must remain in line and wait their turn while vehicles move through the loading zone. Failure to follow these procedures compromises the safety of students, staff, and families.

With the cold weather, there are no student patrols outside, so please be extra cautious and watch for students crossing. We do have a staff member outside to assist, but for everyone’s safety, please follow all traffic expectations during drop‑off and pick‑up.

Thank you for your immediate cooperation in keeping our school grounds safe and accessible for all.

Everyone is welcome to join in the fun! While the event is free, we will be gratefully accepting donations for the Holy Child Association.

What is Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is a long‑standing Christian tradition marking the day before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, families would use up rich ingredients like eggs, butter, and sugar before beginning the Lenten season-hence the custom of enjoying pancakes. Today, it remains a joyful day of community, celebration, and preparation for Lent.

Principal’s Weekly Update and Important Information- February 6, 2026

Attachment:

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a three-day Principal’s Retreat, led by Archbishop Murray. At the same time, our staff participated in a Faith Development Retreat here at St. Charles, led by our Corporate Board Chair, Fr. Eric. These experiences were intentional and deeply meaningful, and I believe it is important for our school community to understand why this work matters.

At St. Charles Catholic School, faith development is a required and valued part of our professional growth. Each year, staff participate in opportunities to reflect, pray, and deepen their understanding of what it means to work in a Catholic school. Teaching and supporting students in this setting is not only a job. It is a choice and, for many, a calling.

Choosing to work in a Catholic school means committing to more than curriculum and instruction. It means modelling faith through daily actions, fostering a culture of respect and compassion, creating spaces where students feel known and cared for, and helping young people grow not only academically, but spiritually and morally as well. It means approaching our work with intention, service, and care for the whole child.

Faith formation supports our staff in this important responsibility. Time set aside for reflection and renewal strengthens our ability to lead, teach, and serve with clarity and purpose. It reminds us why we do this work and re grounds us in our shared mission.

I am grateful for the leadership of Archbishop Murray and Fr. Eric Giddins, and for the commitment of our staff to ongoing faith development. This shared investment ensures that St. Charles remains a faith filled, student centered community where our values are lived each day.

Our PAC, in collaboration with school administration, recently introduced a special community‑spirit initiative to our Grade 8 students: the SCCS Lapel Pin Legacy Project. This project was presented as a meaningful opportunity for students to leave their mark on our school, and their input was incredibly important throughout the process. From the 15 designs submitted, a staff committee selected the top three finalists.

We proudly recognize the two finalists whose designs made it to the final round-your creativity, skill, and vision truly stood out.

Following a school-wide vote, we are thrilled to announce that Emily in Grade 8 is the winner of the SCCS Lapel Pin Design Contest! Her design will become our official community lapel pin:

A huge congratulations to all students who participated-your creativity, enthusiasm, and pride in our school truly shone through. And a special congratulations to Emily in Grade 8, the winner of our Lapel Pin Design Contest! Her design will become our official SCCS community lapel pin.

Our school community will be able to order the lapel pin very soon. Families will have the option to purchase one pin or as many as they’d like-a meaningful keepsake of our shared school spirit.

Over the Christmas holidays, we completed several important upgrades to our Building Management System. Upgrades and new installation measures on the HRV unit on the third floor was completed, improving ventilation and air circulation in the 1906 building. We also restarted an AHU unit in the new building, which will help support more consistent airflow and temperature control. In addition, air vents were installed above classroom doors to enhance air movement between spaces.

We also took this opportunity to complete some painting and a deep clean throughout the building.
All of these updates support more effective heating, cooling, and overall building comfort as we continue to improve the school environment for students and staff.

Our Wednesday hot lunch fundraiser continues!

Reminder: All orders must be placed through Munch-a-Lunch at www.munchalunch.com ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE.
