Principal’s Update – June 27, 2025

As we wrap up the 2024–2025 school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared. This year was filled with growth, joy, challenge, and celebration—and through it all, the heart of our community remained strong: our students, staff, and families.

From faith-filled assemblies and vibrant classroom learning to unforgettable experiences like our Cross Country meets, Hockey Enrichment Program, Band program, Catholic Schools Week, Science Fair, Rome Trip, School Musical, Founders Day, Track & Field, and the Spring Concert—our students had countless opportunities to shine. They have grown in knowledge, confidence, and compassion, and it has been a true privilege to walk alongside them on this journey.

I want to thank our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment and passion. Every lesson, every rehearsal, every moment of support helped shape the positive environment that makes St. Charles so special. Our staff is incredible!

To our parents and guardians—your encouragement, involvement, and partnership continue to make all the difference. We are deeply grateful for you.

Looking ahead, our summer work will continue behind the scenes to ensure a fresh and welcoming start to the new year. The front landscaping project will be completed and ready to greet our school community on the first day of school. Inside the school, the gym will be freshly painted and feature new basketball backboards, along with a new school logo. Our Kindergarten area will also receive updated flooring, a fresh coat of paint, and other improvements to support a joyful and engaging learning environment.

Until then, I hope your summer is exciting and restful—filled with laughter, sunshine, and time well spent with loved ones.

Thank you for an amazing year!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADE 8 GRADUATES

We are proud to celebrate the 27 students who graduated from St. Charles Catholic School this year. Of those, 19 have been with us since kindergarten, growing, learning, and thriving within our school community.

As they leave us to begin the next chapter of their journey, we send them off with our best wishes and heartfelt pride. They have left a lasting mark on SCCS, and we know they will continue to shine wherever they go.

Thank you to the families for your ongoing support over the years—it has meant so much to all of us.

Please continue to check the website for updates!

The school supply lists for the upcoming school year are now posted on the SCCS website.

You’ll find detailed lists by grade to help you prepare for September. We encourage families to review the lists early to take advantage of back-to-school sales over the summer.

Thank you for your support in helping students start the new school year organized and ready to learn!

Next year, we will have three classes in Middle Years: Grade 7A, Grade 7B, and Grade 8. As mentioned in my last update, these classes will share the following teachers: Mrs. Cascegna, Mr. Domolewski, Ms. Copeland, Mrs. Gregorchuk, and Mr. Vechina.

Please note that we are not assigning a single homeroom teacher to each class. Instead, homeroom responsibilities will be shared among the teaching team. On the first day of school, all the MY’s students will report to the third floor. Thank you.

On behalf of myself and the entire staff at St. Charles Catholic School, thank you for the incredible outpouring of kindness as we wrap up the school year.

From your thoughtful words of appreciation and support to the hugs, thank-you cards, and generous treats brought into the school—every gesture was truly meaningful and deeply appreciated.

A special thank you as well for the many beautiful gifts—we recognize and value the time, care, and attention that went into each one.

Your generosity speaks volumes about the strength and spirit of our SCCS community. We are so grateful to partner with such wonderful families.

Your child’s report card will indicate who their teacher will be for the upcoming school year. Please note that full class lists are not shared. Student placements have been carefully and thoughtfully determined by staff and administration, with many factors considered to ensure a balanced and supportive learning environment for all students. These decisions are final and will not be changed under any circumstances. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Report cards will ONLY be distributed on Friday, June 27th and will not be sent home earlier. Students will receive their report cards at dismissal on that day.

If your child will not be in attendance on June 27th, you may pick up their report card:

  • From their homeroom teacher between 9:00–11:30 AM, or
  • From the front office between 11:35 AM–2:00 PM

Any uncollected report cards after 2:00 PM will be held at the school and available for pick-up when the office reopens on August 19, 2025. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

We are asking for your help! So far we have raised $97,095. Amazing!

Principal’s Update – June 20, 2025

Attachment: Clinical Support Services Change

This week’s message begins with a heartfelt thank you to a few members of our staff who will not be returning next year. We are grateful for the gifts they have shared with our community, the care they’ve shown our students, and the contributions they’ve made during their time with us.

  • Ms. Carrie Gel – A valued member of our staff since 2015, Ms. Gel has contributed to many roles over the years, most recently as our Grade 4 teacher. Her dedication and versatility for students have been greatly appreciated.
  • Ms. Ellie Chouzouris – Joined us in 2023 as our Grade 6 teacher and brought warmth and creativity to her classroom.
  • Ms. Jaden Holle – Joined our team this year as the Kindergarten to Grade 4 French teacher and quickly became a joyful and energetic presence in our early years program.
  • Ms. Audrey Mapuyan – Served as an Educational Assistant for the past two years, offering consistent care and support to students across all grade levels.

At the same time, we are excited to welcome new staff members! Each brings a passion for Catholic education and a commitment to student growth, and we look forward to the year ahead as they join us in building on the strong foundation of faith, learning, and community.

I am Joanne Mulvena, and I’m thrilled to be returning to SCCS next year as the Resource Teacher, covering for Mrs. Boughton during her maternity leave. With over 31 years of experience in education, including roles as teacher, resource teacher, vice principal, and principal, I remain deeply committed to supporting student success through collaboration, clear communication, and inclusive practices. I believe all students are capable learners, and at the heart of my work is a commitment to building strong, trusting relationships.

I am Chelsey Levesque, and I am the new Kindergarten to Grade 4 French teacher. I graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2014 and began my career teaching French in rural schools. I’ve taught a variety of grades and subjects, from Kindergarten through Grade 12, which has shaped my adaptable and student-centered teaching approach. In 2022, I joined St. Emile Catholic School as the Grade 1-8 French teacher. As a specialist, I focus on building strong language foundations through meaningful routines, scaffolded learning, and strategies that foster confidence and engagement. My teaching philosophy emphasizes educating the whole child—while creating a positive classroom culture that nurtures curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.

I am Dianne Santos, and I’m excited to be joining St. Charles Catholic School as the new Grade 4 teacher. I completed my Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees in Ontario and moved to Manitoba last year to pursue my passion for teaching. My approach is interactive and inclusive, aiming to meet the needs of all learners. My goal is to develop well-rounded lessons that allow every student to engage meaningfully and experience success. I’m truly looking forward to supporting the Grade 4 students to grow in both knowledge and confidence!

I am Allison Van Helvert, the new Grade 6 teacher. With over 10 years of experience in a variety of school settings, I’ve been on a journey to find the right fit—and I’m excited to call St. Charles home. I’m a teacher, a mom, and a dedicated multitasker. My teaching philosophy is simple: relationships come first. I believe that strong connections with students are the foundation for meaningful learning and personal growth. I focus on helping students build lifelong habits. Outside the classroom, I’m busy keeping up with my two kids (ages 7 and 4), fitting in workouts, reading, and experimenting in the kitchen.

We are also pleased to share our returning staff for the 2025–2026 school year. We thank them for their ongoing dedication and look forward to another wonderful year together.

STUDENT SERVICES – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We are grateful for the valuable partnership and support we have received through this arrangement.

The attached letter explains the changes to this agreement and outlines the next steps to moving forward. If your child is currently receiving speech and language support, we strongly encourage you to carefully review the recommendations provided in the letter to ensure continuity of care.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or require further clarification.

What an energetic and joyful week it has been at St. Charles Catholic School! GO CHARGERS!

Our students laced up, cheered loudly, and showed incredible heart during our Track & Field events at the University of Manitoba, as well as our Fun Day for Kindergarten to Grade 3.

Principal’s Update – June 6, 2025

This week we joyfully came together to celebrate Founders Day, marking 119 years of rich history, faith, and community at St. Charles Catholic School.

Our assembly in the gym was a meaningful gathering, beginning with a heartfelt prayer service and featuring our talented Wind Ambassadors. A truly special moment was opening the Millenium time capsule, connecting us to the stories and memories of those who came before us. We were honoured to welcome alumni families—the Thiebert and Booth-Smith families—as well as former teachers Ms. Luinenburg, Ms. Booth, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Laping, and Mrs. Gair. Current families and members of our Board also joined us in this celebration.

In one of our classrooms, a newly created museum showcased 119 years of our school’s history through photos, artifacts, and stories, bringing the past vividly to life for our students.

Outside, students enjoyed an ice cream cone before embarking on a walking tour of our community. This journey took them to founding landmarks such as the river crossing, the church cemetery, and some of the original homes still standing. It was inspiring to see our students connect with the roots of our neighbourhood and appreciate the legacy that surrounds us.

Thank you to our dedicated staff whose passion and hard work made this celebration possible. Your energy and creativity helped make this week unforgettable.

As we honour our past, we also look ahead with excitement to 2031, when we will celebrate the milestone of 125 years. Together, we continue to build a future grounded in faith, learning, and community.

You’ll find detailed lists by grade to help you prepare for September. We encourage families to review the lists early to take advantage of back-to-school sales over the summer.

Thank you for your support in helping students start the new school year organized and ready to learn!

MEMORIAL TREE – A LASTING TRIBUTE

We are grateful to share that the memorial tree in the front yard has been beautifully landscaped and refreshed, creating a peaceful and meaningful space in our school community.

The tree now features a memorial stone in honour of Keira Bond and Jayme Smith, who were cherished members of SCCS from Kindergarten through Grade 5.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Bond and Smith families for the memorial stone, and to our Board of Directors for supporting the landscaping.

This space stands as a lasting tribute—a place of remembrance, love, and connection to two students who will always be part of the SCCS family.

Thank You for Supporting The NED Show!
We’re grateful for your support in purchasing yo-yos to help fund The NED Show, an inspiring program that teaches students valuable lessons about

Never giving up, Encouraging others, and Doing their best through fun yo-yo tricks.

By participating in this fundraiser, you’re helping us pay it forward—ensuring that other schools can also experience this motivating and uplifting assembly.

This term, Grade 6M has been diving into the wonders of our solar system in Science. Using their knowledge of planet sizes, colors, distances from the sun, and fun facts, each student created their own solar system model.

Students had the freedom to choose their materials and creative medium, resulting in a wide variety of unique and impressive projects. From detailed planets to imaginative displays, the hard work and creativity were evident in every model.

Well done, Grade 6M! Your efforts truly shone bright—just like the stars!

On Tuesday, June 10th, email letters will be sent home to families containing important information about exam expectations, procedures, and schedules.

Exam review sessions will begin in class on June 10th to help students prepare.

The exams are scheduled to take place from June 16th to June 19th. Please note that June 20th will be a regular school day for all students. Thank you for your continued support as our students finish the year strong!

We’d love to have you join the national movement to end brain tumours and to honour the memory of a former SCCS student, Keira Bond.
This year our Keira Krusader Crew will be meeting at Grant’s Old Mill at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 14th.  We will be walking together along Sturgeon Creek, a place Keira enjoyed.
