Principal’s Update – May 30, 2025

Our K – 8 Track Meet was a shining example of sportsmanship and school spirit. With perfect weather, smiling faces, and high energy, students gave their all in every event – from sprints to relays to long jump. We handed out most of the ribbons immediately following the events, and it was heartwarming to see students learning that when we participate, support each other, and try our best – we all win no matter the colour or number on the ribbon.

The tug-of-war battles brought out some playful competitiveness, and our classroom prize draws added an extra layer of excitement. It was a day of joy, movement, and community.

Later in the week, we came together again for our Spring Concert, and what a performance it was! The venue was stunning, the students sounded incredible, and the pride on every face – on stage and in the audience – was unmistakable. Music is such a powerful way for children to express themselves, and it was a joy to see their hard work and talent come to life.

This week reminds us that growth doesn’t just happen in the classroom – it happens on the field, on the stage, and in the way we show up for each other as a community. Our staff continues to provide opportunities for students to shine, and our students continue to inspire us with their joy, courage, and effort.

The highlight of the experience was getting to plant their very own sunflower seeds, giving them a hands-on connection to the science of nature.

This engaging and interactive program sparked curiosity, encouraged responsibility, and left students eager to watch their sunflowers grow in the days ahead. A big thank you to the Seed Survivor team for bringing this wonderful learning opportunity to SCCS! We hope they can come back next year.

Thank You – Camp Manitou Success!
A heartfelt thank you to all the parent volunteers and our incredible staff who helped make our trip to Camp Manitou such a success.

The students had a fantastic time exploring the outdoors, building friendships, and enjoying new experiences. Special recognition goes to our dedicated teaching staff—Mrs. Froystad, Ms. McEvoy, and Ms. Chouzouris—for their thoughtful planning, leadership, and care throughout the trip.

We are so grateful for the support and enthusiasm that made this memorable experience possible for our students!

We are proud to share that our Grade 5 Patrols and Grade 6 Captains were awarded First Place within the Independent Schools Division by the Winnipeg Police Service School Engagement Officers.

This award recognizes the commitment, leadership, and responsibility our students demonstrate in keeping their peers safe each day.

Congratulations to our patrol team on this well-deserved honour! You make SCCS proud!

On Thursday, we discovered that a duck has made a nest and laid an egg at the back of the school!

As ducks are a protected species under the Wildlife Act, the nest cannot be moved or disturbed. It may take up to 21 days for the egg to hatch.

In the meantime, we’ve roped off the area to create a safe and peaceful habitat, and we’re excited to observe and learn from this special moment in nature over the next few weeks. What a wonderful opportunity for our students!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of the 25th Annual St. Charles Catholic School Golf Tournament. Thank you to our generous sponsors, donors, and supporters for helping make this event such a memorable one.

A special thank you to our dedicated volunteers and to Andrea Siwak, our tournament coordinator, for their time, energy, and commitment in organizing this event.

We were honoured to host this tournament in memory of Robert Morrison and Chad Friesen, two beloved members of our school community. Their families remain in our thoughts and prayers, and their legacies continue to inspire us. Thank you for supporting SCCS!

Important information regarding the upcoming track meet was sent home by homeroom teachers. We are asking all families to drop students off directly at John Taylor High School that morning.

Please be sure to complete the Permission Click form that was sent to you in advance of the event.

In case of poor weather, a final decision will be made by 7:00 a.m. on May 26th. We will communicate any changes by email, so please check your inbox that morning.

If no message is sent, the track meet will proceed as planned. Thank you for your cooperation and support!

Congratulations to Mrs. Mardis, our Grade 3 teacher, who was the big winner of the marshmallow guessing contest by perfectly guessing the number – 496 marshmallows!

A special thank you to the Grade 8 parent representatives for organizing this fun contest. Thanks to their efforts and your generous support, we raised an amazing amount to help make the farewell event truly memorable for our students.

We do need some volunteers to transport a few items from the school to SPHS. If you can volunteer please sign up using this link:

Our Grade 1 and 2 students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational presentation from StarDome!

Inside the portable planetarium, students explored fascinating topics such as the Earth, planets, sun, and moon. They observed how the sun’s path changes with each season, deepening their understanding of the solar system in an interactive way.

One of the highlights of the experience was getting to hold a real meteorite – a truly unforgettable moment for our young learners!

Our Grade 1 students recently explored how the sun can help us tell time by creating their own sundials!

As part of their science learning, they observed how shadows move throughout the day and how this connects to the sun’s position in the sky. It was a fun and hands-on way to learn about time and nature.

Principal’s Update – May 9, 2025

As we continue to celebrate the Easter season, we are reminded of the joy and hope that the Resurrection brings. This season is one of renewal, and we are grateful for the renewed energy and purpose it has brought to our school community. Along with this, we reflect on the passing of Pope Francis and the beginning of a new chapter with our new Pope Leo XIV. Let us continue to pray for him and embrace the lessons of faith, compassion, and leadership that Pope Francis imparted to us.

With Mother’s Day weekend approaching, students have been working on special gifts to honor their mothers and mother figures in their lives. These heartfelt creations are a reminder of the love and care shared in our families, and I encourage you to hold onto these precious tokens as they are filled with the creativity and love of our students.

A big thank you to all who have supported the Grade 8’s fundraiser. Your contributions make a significant impact, and we are grateful for the continued support from our community.

Next week, I am away for a 2-Day workshop so there will not be an update on Friday.

IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT SCHOOL ENTRY PROCEDURES

At St. Charles, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. To help us maintain a secure and calm environment, we kindly ask all parents and visitors to follow these important guidelines:

  • All visitors must enter through the main front doors.
  • Please check in at the front office—even if you’re just dropping something off or need to grab something from your child’s cubby or locker.
  • Parents should not be going upstairs, down the classroom hallways, or into the kindergarten area for drop-off, pick-up, or to help their child with something. These areas are for students and staff only during school hours.
  • All student drop-offs and pick-ups must be done outside. Parents waiting in the hallways is disruptive and causes confusion for both reception and staff.

We recognize that most parents are doing their best to follow these expectations, and we sincerely thank you. However, there have been ongoing challenges with some individuals entering areas of the school without checking in or using alternate entry points. Even if the intentions are good, this puts added pressure on our staff and compromises the careful safety procedures we have in place.
We are asking for your support and cooperation to help reinforce these expectations. It takes a collective effort to keep our school safe, respectful, and focused on learning. Thank you for helping us protect the integrity of our learning environment and maintain the safety and security of our community.

We’re excited to begin planning next year’s Hockey Enrichment Skills Program for students in Grades 6–8!
To help us gauge interest, all current Grade 5–7 students have received a Permission Click survey. This is just a survey at this stage—not a registration form. We’d really appreciate it if you could take a few seconds to complete the survey. Knowing our numbers early helps us with planning and logistics.

Thanks for your support!

Our Kindergarten students hosted a lovely Mother’s Day Tea to celebrate their moms! The children sang two sweet songs, enjoyed tea and cookies with their mothers, and had a special time opening handmade presents

together. The celebration wrapped up with some cozy story time—a beautiful way to honour the special women in their lives.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing Kindergarten teachers for making this event so memorable!

Earlier this week, I sent home important information regarding the current measles situation from the Manitoba Chief Provincial Public Health Officer. Please check your email for the full details, and don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions or concerns.

This morning, due to poor air quality caused by nearby wildfires, we made the decision to keep students indoors for the 10:00 AM recess to ensure their health and safety.

We continue to keep the affected communities and all those working tirelessly to support them in our thoughts and prayers.

Principal’s Update – May 2, 2025

We continue to walk through the Easter season with a spirit of hope and renewal. Over the past week, we also took time to honour the passing of Pope Francis by observing the nine days of mourning. Each morning, students reflected on his leadership, humility, and commitment to caring for others – a meaningful way to connect faith with daily life.

With the arrival of beautiful spring weather, there’s a noticeable shift in energy throughout the school. Term 3 is in full swing, and students are demonstrating increased independence and engagement in their learning. We’re seeing students take greater ownership of daily routines—arriving prepared, managing their time effectively, and showing more focus during independent work. Teachers are emphasizing goals set, revision strategies, and accountability, helping students build the skills they’ll need as they approach the final months of the year.

Spring is also a time of change. As the end of the school year approaches, routines may shift and expectations rise. Students are completing unit assessments, preparing for challenges, participating in leadership opportunities, and in some cases, practicing for year-end events or performances. These next few weeks are an important time to reinforce positive habits, stay organized, and keep momentum.

Remember—progress looks different for every student. Whether it’s stronger self-management, improved communication, or increased confidence in their work, these are meaningful steps. We’ll continue to work together—staff and families—to support students in reaching their goals as we head into the final stretch of the school year.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

On Friday, April 25th, the Grade 3, 3-4, and 4 classes took part in an Indigenous craft activity inspired by Ojibwa artist Benjamin Chee Chee.

Students explored Chee Chee’s unique style, known for capturing animals using only a few simple lines and limited colours. After learning about his life and viewing some of his artwork, students created their own Blackline Drawings using his techniques as inspiration.

It was a meaningful and creative experience that connected art with Indigenous perspectives.

Thank you to the 81 families who completed our fundraising survey in April. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and is helping us shape our fundraising plan for the upcoming school year. Based on the responses, the majority of families preferred to either keep the current mandatory fundraiser as is or opt out. As a result, there will be no changes to the mandatory fundraiser for next year. A Permission Click form will be sent out soon with further details.

Save the Date! This year’s Golf Tournament is Thursday, May 22, 2025 @ Breezy Bend Golf Course, please mark it in your calendars! We need help from the entire St Charles community to make this a success.

The School Musical Is Here!
We’re thrilled to announce that Dot & the Kangaroo Jr. is finally hitting the stage!

We’re excited to share that more progress was made on our big gym renovation over the Easter weekend, bringing us one step closer to completing our full gym upgrade.
You may recall that back in December, we installed LED lighting, six ceiling fans, refinished the stage, and added new doors. Over the Easter break, we continued the transformation by:

  • Removing all the radiators and exposed piping
  • Taking down the two large ceiling-mounted heater fans
  • Reconstructing the wall above the stage in preparation for the installation of glass basketball backboards—coming in just a few weeks!

But we’re not finished yet! Still more to come…

A big thank you to our Board of Directors and the entire school community—your support and contributions to the Building Fund have made this project possible.
Special thanks as well to Secure Construction Group Inc. for their excellent management and top-quality work. Amazing job!

Get ready for a sweet challenge – all to support the Grade 8 Farewell!

Can you guess how many marshmallows are in the jar???
The contest starts on Tuesday! Grade 8 students will be selling tickets at lunch and outside after school.

The rules are simple:

  • Guess the number of marshmallows in the jar.
  • The person with the closest guess without going over wins.

Ticket costs: 1 guess for $2 or 5 guesses for $5
Every guess helps support our Grade 8 students as they prepare for their special farewell celebration.

Contest Challenge: The classroom with the highest number of tickets sales wins a box of Timbits.

Prize Alert: Win a 3-gallon drink dispenser filled to the top with a sweet mix of candy and marshmallows! This fun and eye-catching prize is perfect for sharing with friends, family, or your class — or keeping all to yourself (we won’t judge!). PLUS: You’ll get all the fixing’s for Smores and a $100 Canadian Tire gift certificate to fill in the blanks for a relaxing summer evening!

Do you have a band instrument sitting in storage, unused and collecting dust? Put it to good use by donating it to our school! Our music program is always in need of instruments to ensure every student has the opportunity to learn and play.
If you have an instrument to donate, please bring it to the school office or contact Mrs. Gregorchuk. Thank you for your support!

Thank you for your support!
